Pre-announcing our 2021 journeys to the majestic Virunga in SW Uganda

The SW corner of Uganda is a stunning area of biodiversity and nature in a stunning landscape populated by the and indigenous people. We are pre-announcing a 2021 journey that is under development that will provide a unique exploration of one of Africa's most beautiful and diverse areas.

The Virunga are a collection of volcanic peaks straddling the Ugandan, Rwandan and Congolese borders that soar to 4127M on the Ugandan side. Blanketed in forest, they are one of the last sanctuaries of the rare mountain gorilla but also an area of major biodiversity with other-worldly high alpine vegetation. Close to the equator with high UV and large fluctuations in daytime temperature, high alpine vegetation grows to gargantuan proportions with giant heather treas, mosses, giant groundsels and giant lobelia which are feasted on by beautiful iridescent sunbirds.

Most visitors to the Virunga drive in and out to see the mountain gorilla, with some venturing onto the Virunga. Nomadic skies is working on a totally unique trekking journey which will take us across stunning island scattered crater lakes by dugout canoe, along village trails, through small villages and homesteads, through areas of indigenous cloud forest and up to the peaks of the Volcanoes. We will finish our journey in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest exploring an area of thick equatorial forest that is the other last stronghold of the mountain gorilla. We are currently working with community tourist groups, local villages and forest dwelling guides to finalise what will be a totally unique journey. We will be in Uganda in June 2020 to finalise the details of this journey and we plan to organise the first pioneering expedition in summer 2021.

This is an area of the world that Nomadic Skies' founder, Gavin Anderson, knows well. Having lived permanently in Uganda for 9 years, Gavin organised trekking expeditions to the area in the nineties and noughties as Expedition Secretary and the Chairman of The Mountain Club of Uganda. Gavin will be leading the first expeditions to this amazing area in summer 2021.

Contact us now to register interest in these 2021 journeys and we will forward a full itinerary and dates as soon as they are ready.
